Deputy Administrator - Children's Mental Health
Kimberly Abbott has an incredible passion for working to support children and families. She has over 17 years of serving Nevadans in her various roles with the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada. Most recently in her time with its Children’s Attorneys Project, she served as the Mental Health Initiatives Manager, advocating for systematic changes to help improve the continuum of mental health services available to child clients and collaborating with community partners on new initiatives and quality improvements. She represented victims of abuse and neglect in all aspects of dependency court proceedings, and in her prior role as the Pro Bono Project Director, matched low-income clients with volunteer attorneys and developed and implemented innovative strategies to recruit, retain, support, and recognize volunteers.
She has served on numerous committees in the community, including the Clark County Citizens Advisory Committee, NV Supreme Court Children’s Commission’s Behavioral Health Subcommittee, Nevada Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, State Bar of NV Access to Justice Section, and the 8th Judicial Pro Bono Foundation. She was recognized with the CCSD Foster Care Department Mental Health Advocate of the Year Award in 2024, Vegas Legal Magazine Legal Excellence Award in 2023, Clark County Bar Association’s Martin P. Dowling Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007, and the Clark County Bar Association’s Ambassador of the Year Award in 2006.
Kimberly has been a presenter at national conferences, including the National Association of Counsel for Children Annual Conference and the America Bar Association Equal Justice Conference and has conducted many trainings for lawyers and community partners related to youth mental health needs. Her article “Practical Considerations in Advocating for High Needs Youth” was published by the American Bar Association, Children’s Rights Litigation Committee. She holds a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and a Minor in Women’s Studies from Boston College and is a Certified Child Welfare Law Specialist. She is a long-time volunteer and former board member of Helping Hands of Vegas Valley.
Kimberly is excited to bring her knowledge, experience, and dedication related to children’s mental health issues to state service and inspired to be working alongside so many amazing people who have chosen a career serving children and families in the State of Nevada.
